Africa-Press – Cape verde. The chairman of the Cape Verdean Medical Association, Danielson Veiga, said that cases of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), heart attacks, amputations in diabetics and emotional disorders increased in Cape Verde during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Danielson Veiga, who was in Lisbon to participate in surgical training sessions, said that, during the pandemic, people arrived late at health facilities, which resulted in delays in medical and drug assistance and an increase in mortality from these diseases. .
Alongside these physical illnesses, the pandemic increased “psycho-emotional disorders”, as well as alcohol consumption, with consequences in terms of violence, divorces and emotional decompensation.
“In the psychiatric service, almost 90% of the patients were affected and the service, in a way, had to stop, because the health technicians were also affected”, he said.
Consequences of the pandemic
The consequences of this emergency response, he says, are still being felt, not least because “the pandemic is not over yet”: “We had a long delay in scheduling appointments, especially for the chronically ill; the surgeries also had delays”.
The worsening of health conditions was also due to the lack of medicines, as their sale depended on prescriptions and these depended on a trip to health services, which decreased a lot during the pandemic.
