Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo , Dom Ildo Fortes, considers that the loss of civic, spiritual and even environmental values is one of the setbacks registered in the 47 years of independent Cape Verde .
“There are many gains and there are losses, and there are great values that have been lost in our land”, underlined Dom Ildo Fortes, speaking to Inforpress, adding that “there is still a long way to go”, because in these 47 years of independence Cabo Green could have advanced “much more”.
For this very reason, Dom Ildo Fortes defends that the country must now find time for debate and reflection and determine the next steps.
Among the losses recorded, the bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo points to the “attempt to remove” from schools, hospitals and the Armed Forces the classes on religion and morals and the figure of the church, which created “big problems”.
Dom Ildo Fortes reiterates that “a lot has been lost” because, at the moment, Cape Verdean society does not respect the elderly, children and women and has “confused freedom with debauchery”.
Time for debate and reflection
The Bishop of the Diocese of Mindelo warns that “it is essential today to stop and think”, since, as he noted, there is a “huge deficit” in reflection in the country.
“The reflection is not compatible with the level of dispersion that we live. If municipalities, associations, churches do not create spaces for us to reflect, debate and think about the destiny of our country, it does not work”, warned Dom Ildo Fortes, who, in this particular, recalled the “great contribution” that the Catholic Church made and continues to give throughout the construction process of Cape Verde
Advances in road transport infrastructure
Dom Ildo Fortes highlights the progress made by Cape Verde in terms of road transport infrastructure, which in the 70s caused him a “great shock” with the Azorean reality, where all this was on “another level, very well organized” .
“The situation in Cape Verde for 47 years was blatant, which demanded, in fact, independence. I was not aware of this as a child, but compared to other colonies, such as the metropolis, let’s say that Cape Verde was a little forgotten”, considered Dom Ildo, admitting that the country then had “immense work” to free up communities with the construction of ways.
Independence and Cape Verde was proclaimed, on July 5, 1975, at Várzea Stadium, in Praia, by the then president of the National People’s Assembly, Abílio Duarte, who died today. The ephemeris is considered by Cape Verdeans to be the greatest date and an important and historic milestone for the archipelago.
