Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, underlined, this Tuesday, in the city of Praia, that the 5th of July is the “biggest day of the historic contemporary politics of Cape Verde”.
“It is the day when we take our destinies into our own hands and begin to write our history ourselves”, justified José Maria Neves, after laying the wreath at the Amílcar Cabral Memorial, as part of the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of the National Independence.
For the nation’s highest magistrate, it is also a day to value Cape Verdean history and memory, since, as he defended, “only those who value memory can build a better future”.
“This is our wish for all Cape Verdeans and Cape Verdeans”, said José Maria Neves, who, for the first time, laid the wreath at the Amílcar Cabral Memorial as President of the Republic.
National Independence took place on July 5, 1975 and was proclaimed by the then president of the Popular National Assembly, Abílio Duarte, now deceased, taking place at the Várzea Stadium, in Praia.
The 5th of July 1975 is today considered by Cape Verdeans the greatest date and an “important and historic” milestone for the archipelago.
