Africa-Press – Cape verde. The ABC da Praia team was crowned, last weekend, National Junior Men’s Basketball Champion at the under-18 level. The team from the Cape Verdean capital beat the Basketball School La Família de São Vicente, by 66-51, in the final game held, Saturday, September 2nd, at the Polidesportivo de Oeiras in São Vicente.
O ABC, que integra região desportiva de Santiago Sul, também arrebatou o prémio individual de Melhor Jogador (MPV) conquistado pelo atleta Leonardo Monteiro.
The ABC coach, Marcos Moreira, was pleased that they managed to reverse the result in a very close game against La Famíla.
“The strength and key to victory was in defence. I always prepare this defense for the last parts of each game. Today, we played a good game despite having a bad start, but then we managed to turn everything around. It was one of the most closely fought games. We were losing in the first half and we won in the second half”, underlined Marcos Moreira, quoted by the Cape Verdean News Agency, Inforpress.
On the occasion, the ABC coach congratulated the directors and teams of São Vicente for having managed to rescue basketball on the island which, in his words, “was a little dead”.
In turn, Leonardo Monteiro, named the Best Player of the Tournament (MVP) considered having won a “special award” since “it was quite difficult to play” because of an injury.
Resumption of junior men’s and senior women’s championships
Paulo Martinho, representative of the Cabo Verdean Basketball Federation, highlights the effort made to resume the junior men’s and senior women’s championships in a year marked by the presence of Cape Verde participating, for the first time, in the world championship of the sport.
That federative official classified the performance of the teams in the under-18 men’s championship as “exciting” and recalled that he saw players who are now in the national team playing under the same conditions as the current youths, so, he said, “one can expect everything of this generation of talent that can go far in Cape Verde”.
It should be recalled that the National Junior Men’s Basketball Championship, which took place in Mindelo, São Vicente, from August 29 to September 2, had the participation of the following teams: La Família – São Vicente, Botafogo do Fogo, ABC Santiago Sul , Atlético Club Tarrafal – Santiago Norte, DjarMaiBasket and LiproBasket on the island of Santo Antão.
