Africa-Press – Cape verde. The start of classes for the academic year 2023/24 is scheduled for the 18th of September. The official opening ceremony will take place in Ribeira Grande de Santo Antão, announced this Thursday, the Minister of Education, Amadeu Cruz.

The minister, who was speaking to journalists at the end of a public event, made a “positive” assessment of the previous academic year, indicating that, at the moment, the ministry is working on the placement of teachers for the new academic year.

“As you know, we have already published a first list of teacher transfers. Later this week, the second list will be released as a result of the analysis we made of the teachers’ complaints and vacancies”, declared Amadeu Cruz.

Hiring 240 new professors

Amadeu Cruz also added that new teachers would be hired next, with the prospect of hiring 240 new teachers to fill vacancies arising from retirement, unpaid leave and other issues.

“Therefore, around 240 teachers will be recruited. The dispatch approving the academic calendar was signed on the 1st of August. It is awaiting publication in the Official Gazette. The book of general guidelines is being shared with the delegates, directors of schools and groups”, he indicated.

Year nine manuals for the first time

At the moment, said the same source, quoted by Inforpress, the ministry is finalizing the placement of manuals from the first to the eighth year, in the various municipalities of the country.

The Ministry of Education is also working on the production of the 9th grade manuals, which will be introduced this year for the first time, and working on the preparation and finalization of the 11th grade programmes, which should be socialized with teachers in the first week of September.

Another issue that is being finalized is social action, namely with regard to school transport.

“Firstly, school transport to ensure that no child is left out of the educational system, the operation of school canteens and possible extensions to secondary education, in some situations, school kits for children from less well-off family members, that is , we are working to guarantee stability”, guaranteed the minister.

The start of classes will be preceded by a national school cleaning campaign which will take place on the 16th of September and for which the Ministry of Education wants to count on the wide participation of parents and guardians.
