Academic year: PAICV demands the end of charging additional fees in schools

Africa-Press – Cape verde. On the day that another school year began across the country, the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) demanded an end to the collection of additional fees that, according to him, have been illegally levied in schools, causing serious problems for families. The party urges the Government to guarantee the necessary resources for the running costs of schools and the sustainability of education.

“Today we start the new school year and we wish it to be a better, more inclusive year, with greater opportunities and productivity for better results”, began by saying the member of the National Political Commission of the opposition party, Paula Moeda.

“The PAICV, convinced of the State’s responsibility at an atypical moment of crisis in which we are living and of loss of income by families, demands an end to the collection of additional fees that have been illegally charged in schools causing serious problems for families, already in itself in difficulties, and the Government must guarantee the necessary resources for the running costs of schools and the sustainability of education”, he urged, on the other hand.

“Absurd” for the family economy

According to this source, “it has become absurd for family economies to bear the sudden rise in the standard of living, the increase in the cost of school materials, transport and all the other inherent to the attendance of a student in the school system”, by the that calls the executive to act with increased attention.

This, he suggested, through the increase of the State budget for the year 2023 in the education sector, especially in the reinforcement of funds destined to food in schools and the extension to secondary education.

“It is our understanding that there is an imperative need to relieve the most needy families, who constitute more than half of the Cape Verdean population, of the expenses inherent to their children’s school attendance through a greater engagement of the State so that the desired can be achieved. free education”, underlined Paula Moeda.

curriculum guidelines

When the curricular guidelines for the new academic year, the PAICV says it has noted, with concern, a “single and discontinued process of curricular guidelines, by the Ministry of Education, with disturbing and inconclusive effect”.

“Because they are not properly prepared and adapted to our reality and without the effective participation in the process of national staff with long and valued experience and highly qualified teachers”, he pointed out.

Any reform, he underlined, has a formative aspect of monitoring, evaluation and feedback to better adapt to reality.

“The lack of studies and conclusions in this matter and in such a sensitive area for the country as education leads us to conclude that these mistakes cannot continue to be successively repeated, otherwise we will waste the few existing material and financial resources and cause the instability and wear and tear of the educational community”, he criticized.

recoil

For the party, the public policies in terms of education that are being implemented show that the Ministry of Education has made a step backwards in terms of educational policies and that it needs to recover the seal of quality.

The PAICV also asks for the resolution of disputes with teachers, a new look at the sustainability of higher education and the reinforcement of the pre-school network.
