Africa-Press – Cape verde. ADECO called, within the scope of World Consumer Rights Day, celebrated today, for a fair and equitable transition to sustainable lifestyles in Cabo Verde. The organization advocates the need to ensure that this change does not burden the most vulnerable sections of the population and defended the importance of conscious consumption for the protection of natural resources and social well-being.
This year’s theme proposed by ConsumersInternational is “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles”.
“Sustainability is not just an ecological or economic choice, but a choice of social justice,” argues ADECO in a statement.
According to the association, equal access to basic rights such as food, water, sanitation, education and health is necessary.
The organization reinforces that the protection of natural resources must be at the center of every citizen’s daily decisions and public policies aimed at sustainable development.
Given the archipelago’s vulnerability to external climate and economic impacts, ADECO highlights the need for measures adapted to the local context.
Among the main challenges and solutions identified, local sustainability, incentives for the use of renewable energy, efficient management of water resources and combating waste stand out.
It also highlights the inclusion of vulnerable communities with guaranteed access to drinking water, clean energy and transparent information, with special attention to peri-urban, rural areas and peripheral islands; equity in the ecological transition by defending policies that avoid overburdening low-income families and promote fair partnerships between the public, private and civil society sectors and decent wages.
ADECO assures that it intends to continue its mission through awareness campaigns, advocacy for public policies and sustainable projects.
In this sense, the organization appeals to consumers to prioritize local and sustainable products, reducing waste and supporting community initiatives.
It calls on companies to adopt eco-efficient practices, invest in renewable energy and offer accessible and inclusive products and services.
ADECO calls on the Government and municipalities to prioritize investments in resilient infrastructure and policies to protect the most vulnerable consumers.
