Africa-Press – Cape verde. The disease was confirmed by the Directorate General of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock after laboratory tests were carried out.

“In order to respond to the prevailing situation, actions to raise awareness and provide information about the disease were immediately implemented on the ground, through a multidisciplinary team, made up of the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Health Department and the Municipal Council of the Island”, announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in a statement. In addition to these measures, the ministry also ensured the reinforcement of the inspection and control of the exit and movement of pigs and their derivatives, from the infected area to other areas of the island as well as to the rest of the country.

According to the ministry, a Health Plan is being drawn up, “which includes emergency measures to minimize the risk of the disease spreading on the Island, and medium and long-term measures, with a view to controlling the disease, in accordance with the international standards of the World Organization for Animal Health”.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment recommends that farmers: separate/isolate sick animals from other animals; do not slaughter or sell sick animals; burn or bury dead animals in places designated by local authorities; and (iv) do not keep pigs free-range”, the ministry reinforces in the same statement, which highlights that Boa Vista has recorded cases of African swine fever “for some years” due to “inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices in pig farming, which contribute to the circulation of the virus”.

African swine fever is a highly contagious viral disease among pigs, causes great economic losses, and poses no risk to human health.
