Agricultural Year: Minister of Agriculture says it is too early to draw conclusions, but is optimistic

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Gilberto Silva, was today “optimistic” in relation to the 2023/2024 agricultural year, despite admitting that it is still too early to draw conclusions regarding the results. The Minister added that if, during the month of September, it rains the way it has rained in the agricultural year, it could be “reasonable in terms of production”.

“What I can say is that the agricultural year is going normally, but it is still too early to draw a conclusion regarding the results. I must say that in terms of the state of crops, especially corn, on the island of Santiago we have a variety of situations, with there being areas where corn is already flowering and others where people are starting to do their first weeding” , declared the minister.

Gilberto Silva, who made these statements to the press, when asked about expectations for the agricultural year, on the sidelines of a meeting he held with the Chinese ambassador and the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Cape Verde.

More rain is expected

“In some places production is almost guaranteed, but there are other places where we need rain”, he summarized.

In relation to pasture production, he said that “things are on the right track”, but the same optimism is not yet had in relation to groundwater, since for its recharge, he concluded, “there is still a lot of rain needed”.
