Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verdean international sailor Airton Cozzolino became world kitesurfing champion this Friday afternoon, a title won in the last circuit of the 2023 world championship, held in Taiba, Brazil.

Cozzolino, who returned to compete for Italy, beat the fellow Cape Verdean, who has recently been competing under the Spanish flag, Matchú Lopes, in a close contest in the final.

Airton Cozzolino came out on top in this final, scoring 3510 points, against 3190 for Matchú Lopes, and at the moment of consecration the new world champion raised the flags of Cape Verde and Italy.

Hendrick Lopes, also a Cape Verdean sailor, finished the world championship in seventh place.

Already awarded, Airton Cozzolino was thrilled with regaining the world title, claiming it was the result of a lot of work throughout the year and that he had always dreamed of this moment.

The 2023 kitesurf World Cup began to be held on Ponta Preta beach in March this year by the “GKA Kitesurf World Cup Cape Verde”, with the holding of the 1st world circuit that had continuity in other stages such as Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, from 1st to 9th August), Sylt (Germany, from 22nd to 27th August), Dakhla (Morocco, from 26th September to 1st October) and Taiba (Brazil, from 8th to 12th November).

The Kitesurfing World Cup was held in parallel with the Wingfoil World Cup, a race organized by GWA and won last September by the young Cape Verdean Wesley Brito in the wind discipline, on the Dakhla circuit, Morocco.
