Arrival of pirogues: Cape Verde must be prepared for new occurrences – says PR

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic said, this Monday, the 16th, that the country must prepare for the arrival of new pirogues with immigrants from the African Coast, in order to provide all the necessary assistance. The recent occurrences, according to him, could be an indication that there are more pirogues arriving or that there are more accidents of the type happening close by, off Cape Verde.

In a live video broadcast on his Facebook page, José Maria Neves reported that he had already spoken with the Mayor of Boa Vista and urged civil society, local authorities and the Government to mobilize assistance to the 90 immigrants clandestine boats that washed ashore this Sunday on the island of Boa Vista.

“It is necessary to mobilize the entire civil society and all local authorities to provide assistance to these people. And the support of the Government is also essential, in order to help these people who have arrived”, encouraged the Head of State.

Indications of other accidents

However, as he warned, it is much more important to create conditions to prevent future arrivals, remembering that, in September last year, a pirogue with eight people had also arrived.

“In September, a pirogue with eight people also washed ashore. These people have already returned to their countries of origin and now 90 more people are arriving, which is an indication that more pirogues may be arriving or more accidents may be happening here near Cape Verde”, he analyzed.

In this sense, he said, it is important to create ways to prevent and monitor situations of this nature.

José Maria Neves also reinforced his solidarity with the Boa Vista City Council and said he was following this process closely, appealing for everyone’s support and mobilization.
