São Vicente: Association of Fishmongers of Mindelo holds an ecological fair to show the feasibility of reusing fishing by-products
The event called “Eco Pesca – Sustainable Opportunities” will be held in partnership with the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) Paz e Desenvolvimento and Coopera and aims to make these opportunities known to operators in the sector and the general public, according to information from the advisory from APM.
The association recalls that the problem of fish waste has reached major proportions throughout the world, and also cites a study recently carried out by Be Safe Group which demonstrated that the fishing communities of Mindelo, Calhau and São Pedro produce a ton of fish waste daily. .
A fact, which, he highlighted, highlights the “urgent need” to improve the management and reuse of this waste.
“This not only guarantees economic, environmental and social benefits, but also offers the potential to create employment opportunities through the industrialization and commercialization of waste by-products”, praised the same source.
For APM, the fair, which takes place on Friday, in the courtyard of the Réplica da Torre de Belém, currently the Museu do Mar, will serve as a showcase for identified alternatives for by-products in the fish value chain.
Therefore, the event will present projects such as the production of fishmeal for animal feed, arts and jewelry, biogas, mechanically separated meat (fish pulp) or oyster/whelk shell flour.
This initiative is part of the project “Promotion of a more inclusive and sustainable integral fishing chain that favors access to the rights of women and young people on the coast of São Vicente”, financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
