Boxing: “Keny” Gold Medal in Sierra Leone Calls for Better Treatment for Athletes

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Sifonelo Lopes “Keny”, Cape Verdean international boxer, who won a gold medal in the championship held in Sierra Leone, asks for better treatment from the authorities, especially sports, towards athletes representing the country.

Returning to Cape Verde, this Sunday, after being part of the team that won four gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the Zone II African Championship held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, “Keny”, with also this boxer is popularly known, asked the authorities to devote “necessary attention” to the athletes.

He praised sport and the modality as something important for society and for young people and said that Cape Verde has one of the “best athletes in the world”.

This opinion is corroborated by the teammates who, euphoric and with shouts and applause, approved the statements of this winner, who urged not only the authorities, but also businessmen and civil society to move from intentions to reality, with regard to support for athletes .

It’s just that, as he explained, there are many promises, but they never reach the athletes who “sacrifice their own profession, to dedicate themselves to training to raise the name of the country, without there being any returns”.

Better conditions

“If the athletes are recognized and supported by the Government, we can eat better, train harder and we will be in a better position to represent Cape Verde. Who will win is all of us, that is, the athletes, the associations, the federations, the Government and Cape Verde ”, he said.

This protest by “Keny” deserved the immediate consent of his mother, Carla Ribeiro, who went to meet her son at the reception of the delegation, on arrival at Praia airport, to express her satisfaction with the performance of the selection, but annoyed with the “lack of assistance or investment for the child who has been betting on boxing since the age of 10”.

The mother warned everyone that her son, like many of this land, needs to eat to continue performing his tasks, especially sports, at the highest level, as she understands that Sifonelo Lopes has always represented Cape Verde with pride and dedication.

It is recalled that Cape Verde ended Sunday its performance in the Campeonato d’Africa of Zone II with four gold medals won by Sifonelo Borges Lopes (86 kg), Admilson Carvalho (63.5), Elisandro Silva (57) Lenick Fernandes ( 52), one silver won by Márcio Fernandes in the 60 Kg, and two bronze won by Davilson Morais in the 96 Kg and Hernany Gomes (67).
