Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of the Sea delivered motors and thermal bags to five fishermen from different fishing areas on the island of Lomba Tantum on Monday, August 8th. This initiative aims to improve working conditions and enhance fish preservation.
Jorge Santos, speaking to journalists after the delivery ceremony, said that the beneficiaries belong to different fishing areas of the municipality, namely Lomba Tantum, Furna, and Fajã d’Água.
According to him, the items are 15-horsepower outboard motors and storage containers, the quality of which will also improve the lives and fishing activities in these communities.
Jorge Santos also appealed to the fishermen to take advantage of the financial alternatives made available by the Autonomous Fisheries Fund, intended to support investments in motors, boats, purse seine nets, longline fishing, and initiatives that link fishing and tourism.
“We have already trained dozens of young people and fishermen on the island and we will continue, with intermediate-level courses and introductory training in fish handling,” he added.
On the other hand, referring to the locality of Furna, the minister highlighted the progress in the installation of a small ice factory, with a production capacity of two tons/day, the result of a collaboration between the Brava Island Municipal Council and Enapor.
The assembly, he informed, is already underway, and the equipment “should be operational soon,” reinforcing the infrastructure supporting fishing on the island.
In turn, the spokesperson for the fishermen benefiting from the project, José da Lomba, said that the equipment “will bring great value, considering that the engine is an extremely important tool in their profession.”
A boat without an engine cannot fish for such long and high distances, the spokesperson emphasized, and the price of engines, currently estimated at 350 or 400 contos, is high for the fishermen.
“Therefore, we thank the Government and promise to make good use of this equipment,” he concluded.
