Cape Verde at the UN Global Accelerator: opportunity to strengthen International Cooperation and achieve national goals

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government announced today that Cape Verde was chosen as a pioneer country to join the United Nations Global Accelerator on Labor and Social Protection. For the Prime Minister (PM), such recognition not only puts the international spotlight on Cape Verde, but also opens doors to strengthen collaboration in financing and assistance initiatives, boosting the achievement of the country’s main priority objectives.

When asked about the financial amount allocated to the implementation of planned policies and reforms, the Prime Minister emphasized that, at this moment, there is no definition of specific values.

However, he highlighted that the initial commitment is to strengthen policies related to decent work, employment and social protection, factors that led to Cape Verde’s selection for the program.

“There is no definition of values. We first reinforce the commitment through this accelerator to make policies effective regarding the issue of decent work, employment and social protection, and it is because of this that Cape Verde was selected”, he stated .

Correia e Silva highlighted that, as a result of this commitment, there will be funding to strengthen existing programs, in addition to strengthening institutional capacity and carrying out reforms necessary to achieve the proposed objectives. Employment, decent work and the reduction of extreme poverty are fundamental priorities on the country’s agenda.

“The choice of Cape Verde for this global accelerator is a distinction, because there are few countries chosen and few countries elected. This puts international focus on us, and opens up opportunities to reinforce joint financing and assistance action, aiming to achieve our great priority objectives”, he explained.

The global program, coordinated by the International Labor Organization (ILO), foresees the creation of 400 million decent jobs by 2030, and is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as mentioned by the government official.

With regard to migration, the Head of Government reinforced the need for a global approach to find solutions and highlighted the importance of organizing and structuring migration, guaranteeing protection of labor rights, health and social security for those seeking work in other countries.

Labor mobility was highlighted as a priority, with the Prime Minister referring to the labor mobility agreement with Portugal as an example of guaranteeing rights for Cape Verdean workers abroad.

In her intervention, the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security of Portugal, Ana Mendes Godinho, emphasized the importance of the joint candidacy of Cape Verde and Portugal, focused on valuing people as the key determinant in cooperation between the two nations.

The acceptance of this joint candidacy is a crucial step towards the United Nations Social Summit, scheduled for 2025, as pointed out.

“This true cooperation can make a difference in North-South relations, building a world where the SDGs are just one tool to achieve cohesion, social peace and, above all, the recognition that the world is made up of real lives of individuals,” he declared.

It should be noted that the United Nations Global Accelerator is budgeted at four million euros over a two-year period and is expected to reach two thousand people.
