Africa-Press – Cape verde. The results of the business census carried out in September 2023 released today by the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicate that the 18,160 companies that existed in Cape Verde in the year 2022 generated 355 million contos in profit.
In a press conference, the coordinator of INE’s Business Statistics and Indices, Nataniel Barros, indicated that the companies employed a total of 93,230 workers, of which 89,022 were paid and 4,208 were unpaid by the organization.
The data compiled through a study carried out by the institute’s technicians in September 2023 for the year 2022 showed that of the 18 thousand companies, 46.5 percent (%), equivalent to 8,439, are headquartered on the island of Santiago, followed by São Vicente and Sal with 16.8% and 14.2%, respectively, and the remaining islands with 22.5%.
The statistics revealed that only 22.9% had organized accounting, that is, as he explained, they did not present an accounting report and maps, however they have an accountant responsible for the finances.
Individual companies and single-member limited liability companies represent 66.8% of total companies, adding that 36.4% of companies carry out wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, 12.3% are dedicated to transport and storage services, 18.2% are based in accommodation and restaurants, while the manufacturing industry is carried out by 13.4% of companies.
“Administrative activities and support services guarantee the employment of 11.7% of people employed by companies, transport and storage activities employ 10.4% and construction activities 6.4%” he said, adding that the activities wholesale and retail and vehicle repair account for 49% of turnover.
“Accommodation and catering activity represents 10.0% of turnover, manufacturing industries represent 8.7% and transport and storage activity represents 6.9%” he continued, highlighting that 77.1% of companies are headed by men.
Regarding business volume, Nataniel Barros said that 39.1% is guaranteed by companies on the island of Santiago, while Sal and São Vicente represent 34.0% and 18.3%, and the remaining islands with just 8.7%.
The data confirmed that there are more male workers than female workers and that the Brava and Maio islands have a greater representation of women, 49.0% and 48.3%, respectively.
The director of Economic and Business Statistics at INE, Olga Cruz, praised the work of the technicians, highlighting that census agents and supervisors were recruited with representation on the councils so that “everything was accomplished” within the scheduled time.
