Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean Judicial Police (PJ), through the Interpol office, announced yesterday the extradition of four Spaniards caught on the high seas in December with five tons of cocaine, fleeing to Cape Verde in a boat.

At the time, French authorities valued the drug at 330 million euros.

Three months later, the extradition took place on Thursday, “ having been handed over to the country of origin [Spain] at Nelson Mandela International Airport, in the city of Praia ”, following a ruling by the Sotavento Court of Appeal, stated the PJ in communicated.

“ The aforementioned subjects, accused of drug trafficking and criminal association crimes, were wanted by the competent authorities and were flagged red in the Interpol database ,” he said.

The Spaniards were intercepted on a boat, where they were transporting drugs, on December 6th and fled in a semi-rigid boat.

Three days later, they were arrested near the port of Praia.

The operation was classified by French authorities as an example of effective international cooperation in combating drug trafficking.

The interception involved French navy assets in an unspecified area of ​​the Gulf of Guinea, based on information transmitted by the Maritime Analysis and Operations Center (Narcotics) (MAOC-N), in Lisbon, and the anti-drug agency (DEA) North-American.

The intervention team was supported by a maritime surveillance drone.

In Praia, the arrests involved the National Police, through its Foreigners and Borders Directorate (DEF), the Criminal Investigation Directorate and the Maritime Police.
