Cape Verde has the potential to build a true pillar of social protection – EU Ambassador

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The European Union (EU) ambassador in Cape Verde, Carla Grijó, said this Wednesday that Cape Verde has the potential to evolve and expand existing programs and build a true pillar of social protection.

The diplomat, who was speaking at the presentation ceremony of the National Strategy for the Eradication of Extreme Poverty in Cape Verde (ENEPE 2022-2026), underlined that the EU believes that social protection is one of the “fundamental pillars” to reduce and prevent poverty throughout the lives of citizens.

To this end, she stated that policies and programs are needed to reduce vulnerabilities and redistribute wealth and income such as those presented in the National Strategy and which are part of the Strategic Plan for Sustained Development (PEDS).

“Cape Verde also believes and the ingredients are there – the expansion of income transfer programs, the National Strategy, Fundo Mais, Single Social Register (Cadastro Social Único – CSU) and annual action plans with targets up to 2026. Cape Verde has potential to evolve and expand existing programs and build a true pillar of social protection for the Cape Verdean population,” she said.
