Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Sport announced this Wednesday that Cape Verde could host the African Boxing Championship between June and July of this year, also revealing the country’s ambition to host the African Boxing Confederation.

Carlos Monteiro was speaking to the press after a meeting with a delegation from the International Boxing Association (IBA), led by its Secretary-General and CEO, Chris Roberts OBE, who is making his first official visit to the archipelago.

The minister described the presence of the IBA leadership in Praia as “extremely important” not only for boxing but also for Cape Verdean sport in general.

“We are strengthening relations with various international sports organizations, showing that the investment in Cape Verdean sport is serious, committed, and will last for many years,” he stated.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister for Youth and Sports, holding the African Boxing Championship in Cape Verde was a shared intention between national authorities and the IBA, and joint work to organize the event is already underway.

“It will be a large-scale event, and their visit here reinforces the strong intention to hold the next African Boxing Championship in Cape Verde this year,” he said, emphasizing that the ambition to host the African Boxing Confederation demonstrates the country’s commitment to the development of the sport on the continent.

“These are two crucial issues, and after the initial contacts, their visit here to reinforce this intention also fills us with pride and conviction that we are on the right track to achieve these two objectives,” he stressed.

In turn, the Secretary General and CEO of the IBA, Chris Roberts OBE, said that the invitation from the national federation paves the way for more in-depth work on the African continent, especially in the organization of championships and the training of coaches and referees in the region. Regarding the country’s interest in hosting the African Boxing Championships in June, he admitted that it is possible, provided the necessary conditions are met.

Chris Roberts also highlighted Cape Verde’s potential, pointing to the ease of access to the country as one of its main advantages, which, as he emphasized, allows the participation of athletes from different nations without major constraints.

In his view, the strategy presented by the government official is aligned with that of the IBA, based on an athlete-centered approach and the inclusive development of sport.
