Africa-Press – Cape verde. As a sign of protest against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Cape Verde refuses to participate in the Russia/Africa summit. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, and the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, have already shown their public position on the matter.
After the Minister of Justice, Joana Rosa, said that Cape Verde has all the conditions to arrest Vladimir Putin, if he uses Cape Verdean territory in a possible transit to participate in the BRICS summit, which will take place at the end of next August, in South Africa, PR and PM announced that Cape Verde is refusing to participate in the summit as a sign of protest against the Russian invasion.
“[The absence from the Russia/Africa summit] is a sign that Cape Verde gives because Cape Verde is a country of peace, and wants conflicts to be resolved peacefully, in a negotiated way and that we respect the territorial integrity of countries. We think that [the war] does not make sense, therefore, we must, at this moment, create all the conditions so that there is dialogue between the parties and there is a negotiated solution to this conflict”, justified the head of state, in statements to journalists.
José Maria Neves recalled that Cape Verde, from the very beginning, vehemently condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, for defending the sovereignty of States, the territorial integrity of all States, and condemns all interventions by any State in another State.
“Cape Verde has already made its choice”
For the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, Cape Verde has already made its choice and, in this context of war, will not participate in the summit.
“We were consistent from the first moment, we condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the proper forums at the level of the United Nations resolutions and we continue with the same option, that until this war ends we will not have any action that can be considered as support for the invasion”, needed Ulisses Correia e Silva
Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique will be represented at the highest level, with Presidents Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Filipe Nyusi, respectively, while Angola sent the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, and São Tomé and Príncipe will be represented by the ambassador in Lisbon, who it is also accredited in Moscow.
This second summit is expected that Russia and African countries will sign an “action plan until 2026” and a series of bilateral documents, as announced by the Kremlin, trying to make the relationship go beyond agreements in the area of defense and arms sales. , which summarize, in most cases, and to this day, Moscow’s relationship with Africa.
