The delivery took place this Thursday, at Ficase’s warehouse, in Achada Grande, in the City of Praia, and was attended by the deputy regional director of the World Food Program (WFP), Eveline Etty, and the president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray.

On the occasion, Eveline Etty considered this ECOWAS contribution as a clear indication that local and strategic solutions can be found for food systems.
“WFP is very grateful for this solidarity for Cape Verdean children and we hope to see many more regional contributions and commitments to combat food insecurity and malnutrition in West Africa,” she noted.

According to Eveline Etty, with its national school feeding program fully integrated into a solid legal and institutional framework, Cape Verde has demonstrated its dedication to placing children and young people at the center of its vision for human and economic development.

On the other hand, he recalled that in 2022 the WFP created, in all ECOWAS countries,
approximately two hundred thousand jobs, mainly for women, who participate in food preparation and packaging.

“WFP believes that with greater investment and a strengthened partnership with governments, regional institutions and the private sector, we will have more sustainable school feeding programs across West Africa”, he concluded.

In turn, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said that the organization will always be available to help Cape Verde and thanked the Cape Verdean Government for making this donation and partnership possible.

“ECOWAS is our regional organization and Cape Verde is part of that community and whenever we register any need we will always help”, he promised.

The Secretary of State for Agrarian Economy, Miguel da Moura, representing the Government, said that this gesture by ECOWAS is an example of a partnership that Cape Verde would like to strengthen.

For the governor, strengthening school canteens is a way of improving student achievement and helping families, “in difficult times resulting from crises”.

It should be remembered that on September 23, 2022, the Government signed a letter of Understanding with PAM to support the National School Feeding Program and also in mobilizing aid from international partners.

“As the country is going through an inflationary crisis, with rising food and fuel prices, ensuring the full functioning of the National Food Program is a priority for the Government, which, to date, has managed to mobilize support from the PAM , Japan and ECOWAS”, explained the Government in a press release.
