Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Cape Verdean Association of Marine Litter, Euclides dos Santos, said this Saturday in Praia that the organization intends to intensify awareness about ocean sustainability, focusing on education to prevent the disposal of waste in the sea.
In an interview with Inforpress, Euclides dos Santos assured that the association’s central focus is the protection of the marine ecosystem, warning that the risks of pollution, particularly from plastics, remain high and that the “ocean has suffered” from this impact.
“Our focus is to raise awareness among people for ocean education, that is, not to throw or let garbage go into the sea, ensuring that the waste is directed to the right place so that it does not reach the coast,” indicated the manager.
He explained that awareness-raising actions have been taking place in schools, communities, youth groups and religious congregations, through lectures, workshops and open conversations.
Although he acknowledges that isolated cleanup campaigns “have not been sufficient,” Euclides dos Santos emphasized that these initiatives have helped to effectively reduce debris on the beaches of the capital.
“At this moment, we are counting on the support of machinery to intensify the cleanups and we have been working in Prainha, Gamboa, and Quebra Canela,” the manager added, highlighting the growing involvement of local communities in these work fronts.
The association’s objective is for the population to closely observe the amount of accumulated garbage and understand the direct dangers that this waste represents to biodiversity and marine life in Cape Verde.
