Cape Verdean Neno honored by Vitória de Guimarães goalkeepers on his 60th birthday

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Bruno Varela, goalkeeper of Vitória de Guimarães, tearfully paid homage to the former goalkeeper and ambassador of the Portuguese League, Cape Verdean Neno, who died in June 2021. The tribute, which was made on the day in Neno, would complete 60 years old, if he were alive, has moved society and Internet users.

Bruno Varela, goalkeeper of Guimarães, Portugal, wore a shirt in tribute to Neno during the match against Desportivo de Chaves, last weekend, on the occasion of Neno’s birthday.

“I don’t usually get emotional, I’m not one to show emotions”, thus justified Bruno Varela’s sudden despondency, letting several tears fall when speaking of the homage to Neno.

“A word first to the marketing department. It was a spectacular idea to honor Neno on his birthday. They found a special way, word to Neno’s family…», said the goalkeeper before being invaded by a painful sense of loss.

“We are always very sorry when we remember him, we miss him so much. Wherever he is, he will always be proud of us ”, he noted, highlighting a triumph achieved“ in suffering ”.

Neno, Ambassador of the Portuguese League

Revealed by Bairrerensel, in 1981, Neno managed to attract the attention of the leaders of Vitória de Guimarães , the club that hired him in 1984.

His performance with the Vimaranenses shirt later led the young Cape Verdean to be signed by Benfica, to be the immediate reserve of the legendary goalkeeper Manuel Bento.

He returned to Guimarães in 1988 and it was from there that the goalkeeper established himself: after seeing his team placed ninth in the Portuguese Championship in 1988/89 and having achieved an honorable fourth in 1989/90, Neno returned to Benfica, now to be the owner of the red goal, “orphaned” after Manuel Bento’s retirement, in 1992.

Already a veteran, Neno returned to Vitória de Guimarães, still in 1995, saying goodbye to the lawns at the end of the 1998/99 season, still at a high level.

Neno died in 2021, aged 59, from a sudden illness, in the parish of Polvoreira, Guimarães, where he resided in Portugal.
