Catholic Church Announces Translation of New Testament into Creole

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Catholic Church announced today the preparation of a project to translate the New Testament into Creole. The decision was announced at a press conference held this Wednesday, at the end of the second meeting of the bishops of Cape Verde, which took place on June 10 and 11.

The announcement was made by Bishop Dom Ildo, who indicated that there is a multidisciplinary team working on the project.

“We have a very interesting idea, which is the translation of the Bible into our Creole. It is a big project, we are taking the first steps, we feel it is necessary. You know that our liturgy in Cape Verde is in Portuguese, when I talk about liturgy, mass, the sacraments, but we want the Bible to be in the hands of our people also in our language and for that we need to have understanding in biblical theology, in literature, so there is a multidisciplinary team working in this field”, he announced.

On the other hand, Dom Arlindo Furtado stated that there is a need for the church to be present in the Cape Verdean diaspora and that they are working towards this.

“The church is one of the main factors of communion for Cape Verdeans who are outside the country, so the presence of the Church is important for our diaspora, for them, for the Church, for the Cape Verdean nation. We take this into account and try to give it due attention. Cape Verdeans insist that we do more and better and we will see how, according to our possibilities, to meet this desire, this need, for the formal presence of the Church, both among our diaspora”, he stated.
