The tourist route of Cidade Velha, a World Heritage Site, on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde, received 22,359 people in 2023, an increase of 2,561 visitors (13%) compared to the previous year, the Heritage Institute announced this Wednesday Cultural.According to Lusa, the main audience was foreign tourists (53%), and students (21%) and the period of greatest influx was between the months of February and April, as well as between October and December, “which could be associated with the peak cruise season”, states the report.
According to the institute, the data “is promising” for the year 2024, “in which structuring projects financed by the Government are underway”, such as the requalification of the seafront, eight urban intervention projects and the placement of signage.
Cidade Velha is a population cluster 12 kilometers from Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.
It was the first city built by Europeans (Portuguese) in the tropics, in 1460, and the first capital of the Cape Verde archipelago – initially called Ribeira Grande.
Due to its history and architectural heritage, it was classified as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2009, says the source of this newspaper.
