Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Constitutional Court (TC) has just suspended the PAICV assembly, which, on Sunday, the 30th, was supposed to elect the new party leader and the delegates to the Congress scheduled for May 2nd to 4th.
This decision, according to Inforpress, comes following an objection filed by a PAICV activist in which he claims that candidate Francisco Carvalho does not meet the conditions to run for party leadership.
Running for the presidency of PAICV are Francisco Carvalho, president of the Praia City Council, Francisco Pereira, deputy for the European constituency, Jorge Spencer Lima, businessman, and Nuias Silva, president of the São Filipe City Council.
According to the Constitutional Court’s ruling, the complaint at issue is a complaint filed by Jorge Lopes, a member of the PAICV, who accuses Francisco Carvalho of being “ineligible” for the presidency of the party for not having paid his dues “within the period stipulated by the applicable party regulations”.
The candidates to succeed Rui Semedo as leader of the “black star party” are on the ground presenting their respective strategic motions to the militants.
PAICV confirms suspension and calls for serenity In a statement signed by the president of the National Jurisdiction and Inspection Commission (CNJF), Clóvis Silva, the PAICV confirms that the “electoral act scheduled for March 30, 2025 is officially suspended, by order of the Constitutional Court and all Party structures must refrain from any preparations or actions related to its realization”.
In the same text, Clóvis Silva assures that the CNJF “will await additional requests from the Constitutional Court and, in coordination with the competent bodies of the Party, namely the National Council, will inform in due course about the next steps to follow”.
In the text, the president of the CNJF makes an appeal to PAICV militants: “We ask all national, regional and sectoral structures, as well as militants, to respect this decision and maintain serenity, ensuring unity and commitment to the democratic values of the PAICV”.
“The CNJF reiterates its commitment to legality, transparency and the defense of the Party’s statutory principles, making itself available for any additional clarifications through official channels,” concludes the PAICV statement.
