The President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, said today that the figure of singer Sara Tavares will continue to be present, “ like a light that illuminates the path ”, in a message published shortly after the death of the Portuguese artist of Cape Verdean descent was announced.

Your light will illuminate the path that still belongs to us, in this land that temporarily welcomes us ”, wrote, according to Lusa, the head of State, on his personal page on the social network Facebook, saying goodbye with “see you forever , Dear friend “.

For his part, the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today recalled the singer’s ” vocation, dedication and determination ” and highlighted her “great proximity to African music and musicians”.

Sara Tavares, diagnosed with a brain tumor, died today at the age of 45, in Lisbon, a family source told Lusa news agency.

The news of the death was given by the television station SIC, stating that the artist was admitted to Hospital da Luz, in Lisbon.

Over the last year, Sara Tavares had been releasing some new themes, after five years of silence.

He made himself known in the 1990s on the television competition “Chuva de Estrelas”, on SIC, when he performed a song by Whitney Houston.

Shortly afterwards he won the 1994 RTP Song Festival with “Chamar a Música”, a theme by Rosa Lobato Faria and João Oliveira, and with which he obtained eighth place in the Eurovision Song Contest for Portugal, says the source of this newspaper.
