Debate on Justice/Reform: Orlando Dias calls for election of the Attorney General of the Republic, Court of Auditors and Inspectors of Justice

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Deputy Orlando Dias, who competed with Ulisses Correia e Silva for leadership of the MpD at the last national convention, today defended the election of the Attorney General of the Republic, the judges of the Court of Auditors and the Justice Inspectors in parliament.

The fan parliamentarian, who spoke during the debate on the state of Justice, called for a profound reform of justice to be implemented in Cape Verde. A goal that, according to him, requires a review of the Constitution of the Republic and other laws on the country’s justice system in order to grant more independence to the judiciary.

With this in mind, Orlando Dias defended the election of the Attorney General of the Republic, the judges of the Court of Auditors and the Inspectors of the Judiciary and the Public Ministry through the National Assembly.

According to him, the objective is to remove the appointment of holders of such institutions from the government’s jurisdiction in order to create conditions for them so that they can exercise their functions in accordance with the law with more impartiality and without political interference.

It should be remembered that, last week, the Association of Magistrates also defended changing the process for choosing the Attorney General of the Republic, suggesting his appointment among his peers and appointment by the President of the Republic.

With this, the debate on this matter is launched, which will depend mainly on the review of the laws and the consensus between the different political formations, mainly at the level of the MpD and the PAICV, which are parties in the arc of power. There is currently a lot of criticism about the management and performance of the Public Ministry, where many cases are questioned that do not proceed or are archived. All, according to critics, supposedly for political reasons and other interests.
