Dry winds hit plantations and cause concern among farmers

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Dry winds that have occurred in Santo Antão in recent days are damaging corn and bean plantations in the Eastern Plateau, to the dismay of farmers.

According to the farmers cited by Inforpress, the recent rains have renewed families’ hopes for good production, but the dry winds have “ greatly conditioned ” the crops in recent days, although they are “ looking good ”.

The farmer and president of the Luz Viva Community Association, in Lagoa do Planalto Leste, Alberto Silva, told Inforpress that despite these constraints “the plantations are holding up ”, looking “ in good shape ” so far.

Even with the bad weather and despite the existence of the corn fall armyworm pest, Alberto Silva said he believes that “ this year will be better than 2022”, warning, however, of “an unknown pest ” that is attacking the bean plantations.

According to Inforpress, dry winds have also been damaging crops in the interior of the municipality of Porto Novo, dryland production is not guaranteed, but in relation to pasture the situation is normal, according to farmers.

The cultivation of corn and beans has been decreasing, from year to year, in the municipality of Porto Novo, due, in the opinion of farmers, to the drought that has affected this municipality, where the pest situation is “controlled”, according to advanced information by the Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
