The process of electing the leadership of the PAICV parliamentary bench must return to the National Political Commission, which will have to choose a new candidate for this post. The nominated deputy, Démis de Lobo Almeida to replace João Baptista Pereira, did not manage to obtain, today, 18 votes against and 12 in favor, in a universe of 30 parliamentarians who form the parliamentary group of the largest opposition party in Cape Verde .
According to this newspaper’s sources, the electoral board did not accept the candidacy of deputy Luís Pires as it considered that it was allegedly presented outside the deadline established in the internal electoral regulations. Submitted to the vote, Démis Lobo’s only candidacy presented obtained the following results: 18 votes against and 12 in favor, in a universe of 30 PAICV deputies – one elected member who is outside the country delegated her vote.
Given the aforementioned results, the matter must return to the National Political Commission, which must choose a new candidate, as established in the internal electoral regulations approved at the last PAICV congress.
« This is yet another exercise in internal democracy at PAICV, which will certainly find a solution to the problem », analyzes one of our sources who requested anonymity, remembering that, in the previous legislature, there was a dispute for the same position between Janira Hopffer Almada and José Sanchez.
But the one who dedramatizes everything, in her usual comment, is Helena Fontes, leaving the following warning for tambarinas and critical sectors of civil society: « PAICV is a Great and Huge party, with history, ideology, and visibility! Furthermore, he only has skills and abilities, which is why there is more than one candidate for the leadership of our brilliant parliamentary group in the National Assembly (AN). Angry! Go PAICV! Adelante! The rest is fake news to sell newspapers with cheap sensationalism ,” she commented.
It should be noted that the outgoing leader of the PAICV bench, João Baptista Pereira, did not want, for personal reasons, to re-apply for the same position.
