Africa-Press – Cape verde. Starting September 1, 2025, economic operators will have four months to discard or return gel nail polish and other cosmetics containing the ingredient Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide (TPO). The decision is contained in a resolution issued by the Independent Health Regulatory Authority (ERIS) on August 27, reinforcing the ban on the import, manufacture, and sale of these products in the country.
In the document, ERIS emphasizes that the decision follows the update of the Cosmetic Product Composition Regulation, in line with the European Union, which classified TPO as a carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction substance (category 1B).
The ingredient, previously authorized for professional use in artificial nail kits, is now prohibited in all cosmetic products.
According to the resolution approved on August 26, the import and manufacturing ban takes effect immediately.
Products currently on the market may be sold or returned until December 31, 2025. After this deadline, their sale and use within Brazil will be strictly prohibited.
Economic operators are also required to ensure that no products containing TPO are made available to end consumers or used by beauty professionals after the end of the transition period.
ERIS, within the scope of its supervisory and inspection responsibilities, will monitor compliance with the resolution and apply the sanctions provided for by law in case of non-compliance.
The regulator also urges the public and professional users to report any cases of TPO products on the market.
