Africa-Press – Cape verde. The doctor specializing in vascular surgery at Hospital Santo António do Porto, in Portugal, António Norton de Matos, said this Friday that Cape Verde will have all the conditions to carry out a Kidney Transplant within two months.

The doctor provided the information this morning, as a summary of the technical mission in vascular surgery that is at the Hospital Universitário Agostinho Neto (HUAN) to assess the conditions for implementing the kidney transplant project in the country and carry out surgeries for patients with complicated cases. of arteriovenous fistula.

“In two months, Cape Verde will be able to carry out transplants for patients with kidney problems. Here it is simple to find young donors for a given patient, that is, family members are always available, unlike in Portugal”, he explained.

Regarding technical conditions, the doctor who is also the head of the Portuguese mission, who was accompanied by the urologist surgeon, specialized in kidney transplant Paulo Príncipe, stated that HUAN has the support of Portuguese cooperation in carrying out compatibility tests.

But given these essential conditions for carrying out interventions, António Norton de Matos assured that HUAN needs maintenance on some carpentry equipment in the operating theater space, in order to improve conditions at the time of surgery and acquire small instruments to complement what already has, guaranteeing that the rest is all “feasible”, to perform surgeries.

He also stated that a transplant patient spends “less money” at the hospital, leads a normal life, has longer lifespan, fewer illnesses and complications than patients who undergo dialysis.

For the surgeon in this area Denise Pereira, the mission brought “great gains” to the hospital and to Cape Verde, as she said that 30 successful surgeries were carried out, and that the patients are “in a good mood”.

Regarding kidney transplantation, he assured that it has to be a reality, highlighting that in Cape Verde the patients are “very young” and that it is necessary to make the population aware of the importance of transplantation and move means to make this a reality soon.

In turn, the director of the HUAN Dialysis Unit, Helder Tavares, said that this mission has been in Cape Verde since the 26th of this month, and that it has helped “a lot” patients with kidney diseases.

As he mentioned, the country has been registering an increase in cases of this disease and it is becoming increasingly “more complicated and demanding”.

“We realized that this mission will not be enough for our patients”, he stressed, asserting that the center is reducing its maximum response capacity. With this, she highlighted that the need for transplantation is increasingly “greater”.

The official also added that in addition to these arteriovenous fistula surgeries for hemodialysis patients, this mission also helped the only surgeon at the hospital in the area to perform complex vascular surgery.

As he stressed, it is necessary to have “more specialists” to meet “many demands” that have appeared on a daily basis.

It should be noted that this mission of Portuguese specialists in vascular surgery has been cooperating with Cape Verde since 2015.
