Africa-Press – Cape verde. The fight against the fire that broke out on Thursday afternoon in the Cova Matinho area made significant progress last night thanks to improved weather conditions, the mayor of Santa Catarina do Fogo said today.
Manuel Teixeira, who assessed the fire at 7 am, said that the reduction in wind and frost during the night/early morning contributed to slowing the spread of the flames, allowing one of the fronts, located in the upper area, to be extinguished naturally.
“At this moment (7am), only one fire front remains active, with reduced intensity. The firefighting teams remained on the ground until midnight, ensuring surveillance and containment of the fire,” said the mayor, who said he hopes that, with the arrival of a military contingent to reinforce the operation, the situation will be controlled.
