Fishing: Cape Verdean delegation in the Azores and Vigo to discover the Lota system

Africa-Press – Cape verde. As part of the Costal Fisheries Initiative – Challenge Found project, a team made up of technicians from the National Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, shipowners, wholesalers from Praia and CV Ocean are, since this Wednesday, 5th, on a mission to the Azores (Portugal) and Vigo (Spain), in order to learn about the operation of the auction system, to be implemented in the Port of the capital.

This is because a system for the first sale of fresh fish at auction is in the process of being implemented in Porto da Praia, through the auction system, as a price regulation mechanism in the sector.

According to a government note, this system aims to strengthen the concentration of supply and demand, transparency in pricing, hygienic-sanitary control of fish, as well as monitoring and economic, environmental and social assessment of fishing activity.

Within the scope of this study, the Cape Verdean delegation will be in the Azores and Vigo until the 15th of October, in order to get to know, in loco, the functioning of this system and the technologies used, with a view to its implementation in Cape Verde.

Sustainability

“The auction system should promote the sustainability of shipowners and wholesale trade, within a framework of adding value and economic, social and environmental sustainability”, defends the executive.

The Costal Fisheries Initiative – Challenge Found project, whose implementation study will begin at the Praia Pesca Port, is financed by the World Bank.

What is the lottery system?

In Portugal, the space in a port where the first sale of freshly caught fish is made, often under an auction system, is called a fish auction.

After checking whether the fish meets the sales criteria (size, healthiness, etc.) the fish is divided into lots, which are offered for sale at an auction.

However, unlike usual in other auctions, in this case the auctioneer starts by giving the maximum price, and the buyers place their bids, for lower amounts.
