Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Empresa Intermunicipal de Águas (Águabrava) began today a campaign to prospect for groundwater with the execution of five boreholes, two in the south, two in the north and one in Chã das Caldeiras. There are currently 130 pending requests for water connection for irrigation.
For this campaign, the company’s board of directors authorized the contracting of a bank loan in the amount of 90 thousand contos to finance some activities, including the execution of the five holes.
Rui Évora, administrator/delegate of Águabrava, explains that the objective is to strengthen the capacity to supply water to the population, whether for human consumption or to meet pending requests for the agriculture and livestock sectors, and is currently, according to this source, more than 130 pending requests just for the irrigation water connection.
But, as the same source explains, to satisfy the demand for irrigation, it is necessary to increase the water availability capacity by another 160 cubic meters/day.
With the completion of the five boreholes, Águabrava expects to increase the availability of water by another 15 to 20 percent (%).
Location
Of the five boreholes, two will be located in the northern part of the municipality of São Filipe, at the site known as Tamarinho Nhá Loba, and another two in the southern part of the municipality of São Filipe, in the town of Sebastião Dias.
The fifth hole will be located in Chã das Caldeiras, municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo, between Boca Fonte and Portela, and the work will be carried out by a company contracted by public tender, starting in the north area, then moving on to the south area. and Chã das Caldeiras.
The goal with the drilling, according to Rui Évora, is to mobilize 700 to 750 cubic meters of water/day, about 265 thousand cubic meters of water/year, corresponding to 19% of the annual volume explored in 2020.
The competition implies, in addition to drilling, the respective pumping tests as well as the evaluation of all physical-chemical and bacteriological parameters.
In addition to Águabrava, several other economic operators and institutions, including the New Apostolic Church through a charity organization, intend to carry out water prospecting projects for their own activities.
