The possibility of establishing the partnership was reaffirmed by the president of the Fogo Island Biosphere Reserve, Nuías Silva, at the closing ceremony, Friday, 15th, of the II Meeting of the Biosphere Reserves Network at CPLP, which took place on the island of Fogo. “I am satisfied with the contribution and experience of the Atlantic Forest Reserve and we will establish partnerships to work and explore the issue of caves”, said Nuías Silva, highlighting that the island has a lot of potential, but its true technical-scientific cataloging is still unknown. and tourist.

The representative of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Reserve, Clayton Lino, was satisfied with the possibility of establishing a partnership in this matter between the two reserves.

As he explained, in addition to being an architect by training, his “lobby” is speleology and he was even president of the Brazilian Society of Speleology and is therefore interested in the issue of caves formed by lava tubes.

“The caves are very special and there are several here. It has very great potential, not only for scientific studies from a geological and biological point of view, but also in the tourist field and are important attractions”, said Clayton Lino, highlighting that as part of the field mission he had the opportunity to visit the volcano and go a little into one of the caves or lava tubes.

The possibility of exploring the caves can be shared not only with the Atlantic Forest Reserve, but with other Brazilian Reserves that make up the Brazilian network, said the representative of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, who indicated that only within his reserve there is almost seven thousand caves.

At the level of Brazil and its reserve, he explained, there is a lot of work being done, both in legislation for the protection of caves and in studies for tourist development, and there is interest on the part of the Atlantic Forest Reserve in working together with other reserves in this area. matter.

“It is a very important heritage that exists here. It is a tourist attraction for the island of Fogo”, she concluded.
