Africa-Press – Cape verde. The city of São Filip and, on the island of Fogo, hosts , on the 13th and 15th of May , the VI Week of reflection on gender-based violence (GBV), the organizers of the event inform in a press release.

The week of reflection on gender-based violence has been held and institutionalized since 2019 by the Cape Verdean Association for the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence (ACLCVBG) with the sponsorship of the President of the Republic and after five editions on the island of Santiago the association decided, this year, to decentralize it.

In a press release, ACLCVBG informs that from previous editions of the week , which has been a time for debates, sharing and reflections on the situation of GBV in Cape Verde, a set of recommendations have emerged that are being implemented by the association in order to reinforce GBV prevention work, victim assistance and rehabilitation of perpetrators.

“Taking into account that the week has been held for five editions on the island of Santiago, this year for the VI edition, ACLCVBG proposes to hold it on the island of Fogo to decentralize the event to discuss the particular case of the island of Fogo which is one of the islands with the highest rate of GBV” states the press release, highlighting that the choice of the island to host the event is also due to the fact that a representation of the association was recently created.

The schedule for the VI Week of reflection on GBV points to the holding next Monday, May 13th, of an international conference entitled “The prevention of gender-based violence: the contribution of the island of Fogo” and a workshop on “Women multipliers of citizenship” which will have gender specialists Paulo Silva and Talina Pereira as speakers, respectively.

Most of the debates and reflections are scheduled for May 15th, with the opening session being chaired by the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, with interventions from the president of the General Assembly of ACLCVBG , Antonieta Martins , and the president of the Municipal Chamber of São Filipe, Nuías Silva.

After the opening, four panels will be socialized and debated, the first on the state of the art “The context of the fight against GBV on the island of Fogo”, the second on the response network “The challenges in responses in the fight against GBV”, the third called cases and experiences “The fight against GBV in the Cape Verdean diaspora in the USA” and the last one on public policies “Combat strategies”.

The closing session, which will be preceded by conclusions and recommendations, is in charge of the president of the association’s General Assembly and the president of the Municipal Chamber of Santa Catarina do Fogo, Antonieta Martins and Alberto Nunes, respectively.
