Fogo: Increased price of corn and animal feed may represent the end of the livestock sector – Responsible

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The increase in the price of corn and animal feed may represent the end of the livestock sector on the island, said on Monday the president of the Cheese Grouping in the island of Fogo, Manuel Mendes.
Speaking to Inforpress, Manuel Mendes said that animal feed increased from “almost 700 escudos” to 50 kilograms, representing an average increase of 35 percent (%), stressing that “this increase will put an end to the sector” because livestock farmers will not be able to support it.
Like the livestock farmers, the president of the Cheese Grouping asks “where is the Government and the Ministry of Agriculture”, since “no one has talked yet about such a large increase”.
“Having an increase of 50, 100 escudos in each bag can be understood because the raw material has increased, there is transport and everything has become more expensive, but an increase in a raw material as fundamental as corn and animal feed is not normal”, defended Manuel Mendes, adding that this increase will affect animal production, be it goat, cattle, pork and others.
