Fogo: Mayor predicts that a technological and university resources center will be operating in São Filipe next year

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The mayor of São Filipe, Nuias Silva, announced on Friday the implementation of the project that aims to create a center for technological and university resources in that municipality, with its operation scheduled for 2026. “A technological resources center could probably be operating in São Filipe next year, where all universities that already have protocols with the city hall can start receiving students virtually, so that they can complete their higher education and postgraduate studies,” explained Nuias Silva, in an interview with RTC.

According to the mayor, this pilot experience could serve as a model and be exported to other so-called peripheral islands, taking advantage of the wave of attraction to its territorial space, of higher education, science, technology, and thus guaranteeing the “higher education of the future”, on the island of Fogo and in Cape Verde.

“We want knowledge to come to Fogo, but we also want Fogo to participate in this process of knowledge for the whole country. That is why we are making this investment effort between the city government and partner institutions. I think this is the way forward (…), using technology to democratize access to higher education, and we are going to do this on Fogo Island, starting in São Felipe,” he said.

Reiterating that the city hall is “working hard” to set up the first technological and university resources center in São Filipe, Nuias Silva said that the institution should operate in the semi-detached houses next to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, offering courses and “saving families” from having to send students who do not want to travel to Praia or São Vicente.

“Students from Santa Catarina, Mosteiros and even Brava can study in São Filipe… study and take courses at the University of Santiago, the Higher Institute of Law and Social Sciences, here in Fogo,” he added.

He highlighted that the idea is to have students attending face-to-face classes in these technology resource centers, participating in a ‘b-learning’ system or through videoconferences, at the same time as they are taught at universities, in Praia, São Vicente or in Assomada.

Remembering that it was a promise, the mayor said, therefore, that he is working on this pilot modality in Cape Verde, and showing that it is possible to use technology in favor of the development of the territory.

“Making families and students make less effort to access quality higher education from Fogo Island, allowing them to continue to carry out their normal day-to-day activities, but it is also an offer that will allow people to train after work hours,” he noted.

Nuias Silva concluded by highlighting that the idea of the center is to also be able to offer training at postgraduate and master’s level, in the same modality, where people who attend the space will have all the tools and technologies to attend classes, normally, although with the teacher at a distance.
