According to Leão Lopes, the initiative promoted by Ateliê-Mar, in partnership with the creators of Monte Grande and the Municipality of São Filipe, aims to contribute to promoting the community of Monte Grande and encouraging local cheese producers.
The “Monte Grande, Fogo Island, Cheese Festival” program naturally foresees debates around the production of cheese, namely tradition and economic innovation, but also an exchange between creators from the North Plateau (Santo Antão) and Monte Grande. (Fogo), in addition to holding the “best cheese in Monte Grande” contest.
The Cheese Festival will have varied activities such as music, in addition to local cuisine such as homemade wine, goat with xerém, cufongo, a kind of bread made from corn, porridge with goat’s milk and lots of cheese.
Tradition
The initiative aims to promote Monte Grande and Fogo cheese, especially the traditional one, stimulate production and the commitment of cheese creators and producers to improve quality and expand their trade.
It is also intended to arouse the interest of young people in the production of good Fogo cheese, through a cheese workshop (workshop) to be held during the week of the Cheese Festival and to encourage the community of Monte Grande around its local economy. , reference which is cheese.
The choice of Monte Grande for the Cheese Festival is due to the fact that it is a “cohesive community, with a tradition in the manufacture of cheese and with potential for endogenous development”, said Leão Lopes.
It is recalled that Monte Grande and the neighboring communities of Lacacã and Miguel Gonçalves concentrate a large number of goats with a strong tradition of cheese making, including a semi-industrial cheese production unit.
