Africa-Press – Cape verde. The 2023 edition of the Fogo Vulcan Trail, the Cape Verde Trail Series stage on the island of Fogo, has ended. The event took place over two days in the town of Chã das Caldeiras with several events and more than 100 athletes involved.

On the first day, July 15th, the vertical kilometer took place, which includes the mythical ascent to the Fogo volcano. A race in which 15 athletes participated.

Miguel Arsénio won with a time of 00:51:18, followed by Iderlindo Barros with 00:51:33 and in third place Valter Araújo with 00.53.29.

In the women’s category Edna Lima was the first to reach the peak of the volcano with 01:09:51. The Portuguese athlete Ester Alves was in second place with 01:10:53.

Other evidence

On the second day of competition, on the 16th of July, several events took place simultaneously, namely the Long Trail (30 km), the Short Trail (16 km) and the Young Trail, in addition to the usual walk.

In the longest route, 35 athletes participated. The Portuguese Miguel Arsénio won with a time of 02:19:40, Valter Araújo from Emicela Team was in second place and Milly Brito from São Nicolau in third.

In the women’s, long trail, Ester Alves won and Edna Lima was in second place.

In the Short Trail, 57 athletes participated. The 16 km race was won by Edy Monteiro from the Emicela Team, who completed the race in 01:10:35. In second place was Cavikson Fortes and in third Quelton Lomba from Grupo Desportivo Atletismo Ribeira Grande de Santiago.

The Women’s Short Trail was won by Liliana Medina from the Jal Domus Nostra team, followed, in second place, by Daty Miranda and third by Itelvina Reis.

Trail Jovem had 6 participants where Dovik Sanches from Emicela Team was the big winner.

A success – says organization

The organization of Fogo Vulcan Trail considers the event to be a “success”, having exceeded expectations in terms of adherence, in particular to the main races, short and long trails and vertical climb.

The event also included a walk and the Kids Trail.

The Cabo Verde Trail Series now heads to the island of Santo Antão for the Santo Antão Triangle Trail that takes place on the 29th, 30th of September and 1st of October.
