Former combatant Pedro Martins passed away: Funeral is this afternoon in Assomada

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Pedro Rolando dos Reis Martins, the youngest ex-political prisoner of the Tarrafal Concentration Camp, passed away this Tuesday, a victim of a prolonged illness. The funeral takes place this afternoon at the Santa Catarina cemetery.

Born in Santa Catarina, Santiago Island, Pedro Martins was 16 years old when he joined the ranks of the PAIGC, having been one of the patriots of the party’s clandestine political leadership.

He was arrested by the PIDE at the age of 19, in August 1970, being the youngest political prisoner in the Tarrafal Concentration Camp, where he remained for four years.

He was one of the seven members of the Board of the Broad Front for National Liberation, created shortly after the 25th of April, to make the ideals of National Independence known to the Cape Verdean people.

It should be noted that Pedro Martins was the first President of the African Youth Amílcar Cabral (JAAC).

The ill-fated man was also founder and president of the Homeland Freedom Fighters Association and author of the book “A testimony of a combatant”.

He was a recognized architect, by profession, an area for which he always fought, also being the author of several exhibitions in the area.

The funeral takes place today, at the Santa Catarina cemetery, with a funeral ceremony in the Parish Hall of Achada Santo António, Praia, starting at 15:30.
