Africa-Press – Cape verde. Athletes Wilson Cabral, male, and Jessara Xavier, female, are the winners of the 2023 edition of the Corrida da Liberdade, held in the city of Praia under the motto “Sports for All”.
The winner of the senior male category, 10 kilometers (km), Wilson Cabral, said it was a “difficult” race given the strong competitiveness of second place, (Artur Silva) and Kelton da Lamba, surpassed only in the final “sprint”.
For the athlete from Santa Catarina, who is also the driving force behind athletics in Santiago Norte, this was the best way to start the year and he aimed to achieve “more podiums” in the next competitions.
Jessara praises effort
In the women’s group, Jessara Xavier, who overcame Edna Lima and Adalgisa Varela, ranked second and third respectively, said it was a “very easy” race.
“In the first five kilometers I started to relax because I was alone at the front and therefore it wasn’t necessary to make so much effort”, said the young athlete from Assomada, who covered the 10 kilometers in 42 minutes.
Monetary prizes were 80,000 escudos, 60,000 and 40,000 escudos for the top three male and female seniors (ten kilometres), in addition to rewards up to the eighth place.
The competition was carried out by the City Council of Praia, in partnership with the Regional Athletics Association of Santiago Sul.
