French Development Agency Returns After Two Decades

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of the Sea announced today the return of the French Development Agency to Cape Verde. The announcement was made at a press conference held this morning in São Vicente, in anticipation of Cape Verde’s participation in the 3rd United Nations Conference on the Ocean, which will take place from 9 to 13 June in France.

The return of the French Development Agency is expected to follow the signing of two cooperation protocols between the two countries.

“We, representing the Government, will also be signing two important protocols with the Government of France on the 7th, tomorrow. The first protocol is the return and installation of the French Development Agency in Cape Verde, which is good news. We have had the French Development Agency in the past and, finally, 20 years later, it is returning again to set up shop, to be a development partner for Cape Verde in terms of financing major projects, mainly blue economy projects”, he stated.

According to the minister, the second cooperation protocol refers to the construction of the French School in Cape Verde, known as Les Elysées School.

“It will be in Praia. The Les Elysées school in Cape Verde already has a branch in Praia, but they will also be planning a branch in São Vicente. Now they will build the branch in Praia. And I certainly hope that we will be signing the second protocol to also build the branch in São Vicente. But the important thing is the return of Les Elysées, because Les Elysées appears as a consequence of the cultural and linguistic policy agreement with France. It is a project of the Francophonie”, he assured.

For Jorge Santos, the return of the AFD is “a clear sign” that Cape Verde continues to be a priority in French foreign policy. Both protocols will be signed by the Minister of the Sea, representing the Government of Cape Verde, and by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Minister of the Sea leads the Cape Verdean delegation to the 3rd Oceans Conference, which also includes the National Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Administration of the Sea Institute and the Technical University of the Atlantic.
