Africa-Press – Cape verde. Journalist Geremias Furtado was today re-elected as president of the Board of Directors of the Cape Verde Journalists’ Union Association (AJOC), unanimously by the 40 voters in an elective general assembly, held at the headquarters of this union association in Plateau.
The single list submitted for scrutiny received the full confidence of the members, with the board of directors remaining practically intact for this second term, Gisela Coelho sharing the vice-presidency with José Pedro dos Santos, with Ariana Vaz holding the portfolio of treasury.
Journalist Jaime Rodrigues continues to preside over the Board of the General Assembly, João Almeida Medina assumes leadership of the Deontological Council, while Ângela Mendes assumes the presidency of the Fiscal Council.
In his first reaction after being reappointed to the position, Geremias Furtado said that the management aims to continue with the same dynamics, investing in training, so that AJOC can be intervened and, above all, be able to dialogue with employers in order to improve the conditions of journalists.
“It is clear that in the face of the challenges of the world we also have to get closer to our counterparts, especially in our African region, to bring more partnerships in order to improve the provision of journalism in Cape Verde”, he said, announcing the desire to reinforce the collaboration with the Training Center for Journalists of Portugal (Cenjor) in order to bring more training actions.
This is because it argues that it is not enough for AJOC to fight for their rights as workers, but also to have the capacity to provide tools so that the association is capable of doing its work with all the rigor and quality necessary, even more so at this time when the evolution comes running after the class.
Geremias Furtado expressed, on the other hand, his concern about the departure of some journalists, due to entering positions such as consultancy or for other reasons, but said that AJOC continues to be “for everyone”, highlighting the importance of everyone coming together around the union association in a fight for press freedom and that Cape Verde actually has strong communication and knows how to do its job.
Geremias Furtado highlighted the 100% favorable vote on the list presented and stated that the result satisfies him and the entire team, but that the existence of more than one list reinforces internal democracy, which is why he calls for the emergence of new ideas in the coming scrutiny.
