Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be awarded the Amílcar Cabral Order, in recognition of German support for the Mindelo Ocean Science Center (OSCM), launched in 2014.
The distinction will be presented by the Cape Verdean head of state, José Maria Neves, in a ceremony at the presidential palace, in Praia.
“For more than a decade we have been working to consolidate very strong cooperation in this field. We have the Mindelo Oceanographic Ocean Center, we have many research actions linked to the oceans and all atmospheric issues”, said the Cape Verdean President on Monday Monday, when anticipating the visit.
The visit serves to “open new avenues of cooperation between Cape Verde and Germany, not only intergovernmental cooperation, but above all cooperation between companies, between research institutes, between universities”, he added.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s agenda in the country’s capital will include, later today, participation in a formal session at the National Assembly and a meeting with the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva.
On Thursday, the German President will visit the city of Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, where he will participate in the laying of the first stone of the new laboratory building of the Cape Verde Environmental Observatory (CVAO).
