Government Approves Commission to Update Emissions Targets

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The government has created a commission to update national greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, the Agriculture Minister announced today.

“The government approved today a resolution that creates a commission to update our NDC [Nationally Determined Contributions],” Gilberto Silva announced at the second plenary session of July.

The minister envisions the update being made before the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place between November 10 and 21 in the city of Belém, Brazil.

Cape Verde updated its NDC in 2021.

The original document, prepared in 2015, included 42 mitigation measures and some adaptation measures, covering the energy, transport, waste, agriculture, forestry and other land use sectors.

The 2021 update deepened and expanded the initial set of actions and commitments, reinforcing the scope and ambition of the sectors, the balance between mitigation and adaptation, climate justice, gender equality, transparency, and governance.

The energy, transportation, agriculture, forestry, and other land use sectors were retained, and tourism and the circular economy were added.

The updated NDC includes 14 contributions—five for mitigation and nine for adaptation—with more than one hundred planned measures.

Last year, the Government announced that Cape Verde needs to mobilize 3.1 billion euros over 26 years to implement the measures of the low greenhouse gas emissions strategy, which defines, in particular, that the country must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18% by 2030, in relation to current emissions, which correspond to 0.02% of the global total.
