The Government of Cape Verde has already authorized a guarantee to the Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Turístico de Boa Vista e Maio (SDTIBM), in the amount of 220 million escudos, for the completion of the requalification works of Largo de Santa Isabel, in the city of Sal Rei. The information, shared by the local authority, came from a meeting between the Minister of Finance, Olavo Correia, the Minister of Tourism, Carlos Santos, the Chamber of Tourism and the mayor of Boavista.
The Government’s visit, according to the Boa Vista City Council, aims to improve the relationship with the municipality and accelerate the projects in the portfolio, namely the requalification of Largo de Santa Isabel.
Within the scope of the meeting, the holder of the tourism portfolio, Carlos Santos, said that the Government has already authorized an endorsement to SDTIBM, in the amount of two hundred and twenty million escudos (220,000,000$00) that will allow the conclusion, within the contractual period, , the requalification works of Largo de Santa Isabel, in the city of Sal-Rei.
The mayor, Cláudio Mendonça, stressed that this endorsement came at a good time, since it is the Boa Vista City Council that has “held up” the financing of the works so far, “stifling the municipal treasury and preventing the contractor from abandoning the construction”.
Cláudio Mendonça was also concerned about the non-transfer of the Tourism Fund to Boa Vista, stressing that there are works carried out and supported by the city council, such as the connection of energy and water in the Boa Esperança neighborhood, the amount of which, according to him, is not was refunded.
He also highlighted the weak public investment on the island, specifically the requalification of the seafront of the city of Sal Rei, sewage networks, means of collection and treatment of solid waste, environmental protection projects, health, education and professional training, among others. spots.
The mayor assured, on the other hand, that the municipality he directs is open to the promotion of a good relationship of partnership and cooperation with the Government, considering that greater articulation between local and central authorities is essential.
The Minister of Tourism, for his part, acknowledged that, as a tourist island, Boa Vista is gaining space as one of the islands with great importance in the sector, leaving the Government’s commitment to place the island at the center of the process. of development in Cape Verde.
“We have some projects announced that we should bring back here to be aware that the island has absorbed its fair share in this program”, said Carlos Santos, recalling that previous work on identifying projects to be financed under the Operational Tourism Program (POT) were made in conjunction with the municipal councils, according to the potential of each island.
The POT has funding of 200 million euros, over the next five years, for all islands and municipalities.
According to the authorities, around 80 million euros have already been mobilized, with funding from various sources, including the Tourism Fund (50 million) and the World Bank (30 million).
