Guinea-Bissau Family Denounces Arbitrary House Arrest

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The family of Guinean political leader Domingos Simões Pereira today expressed “deep concern” regarding his detention status, alleging that the politician is being held under house arrest without any formal judicial charges having been filed.

In a statement sent to the press, his family members—acting in coordination with his defense team—condemn recent statements by the Guinean government suggesting that institutional normalcy prevails in the country.

According to the statement, this stance stands in stark contrast to the reality of “arbitrary deprivation of liberty” currently being experienced by the political leader, who remains surrounded by armed forces at his residence.

The leader’s lawyers maintain that there is no legal basis for restricting his freedom, emphasizing that, to date, no formal proceedings have been initiated nor have any charges been presented.

The family further denounces an alleged attempt to fabricate new legal frameworks to justify the detention, following what they describe as the collapse of previous charges due to a lack of evidence.

According to the same source, narratives based on “hypothetical intentions” are reportedly emerging, alongside reports regarding the potential establishment of a special military tribunal to try the case—a scenario the family deems illegal.

“When there are no facts, guilt is manufactured,” states the document, which characterizes the situation as political persecution.

The statement asserts that the case constitutes a violation of the Guinean Constitution and various international legal instruments, including those of the African Union and treaties concerning human rights.

In the family’s view, Domingos Simões Pereira’s case is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a broader pattern of undermining democratic institutions—a pattern characterized by the restriction of freedoms, the neutralization of political opponents, and the alleged manipulation of the judicial system.

The family members also criticize the lack of a formal stance from international organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations (UN), and the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

According to the statement, the silence of these entities could be interpreted as tacit tolerance of the deteriorating rule of law within the country.
