Guinea-Bissau is prepared to assume the presidency of the CPLP - Guinean spokesperson

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Guinean President’s advisor and spokesperson, António Óscar Barbosa, assured this Thursday in Lisbon that the country is prepared to assume the presidency of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) in June.

“Guinea-Bissau is prepared to assume the presidency of the CPLP. He recently assumed and performed brilliantly the presidency of ECOWAS [Community of West African States],” he said.

António Óscar Barbosa speaks at a press conference called by the Presidency of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau “to clarify the reasons that led to the dissolution of the National Popular Assembly and the appointment of a Presidential-initiated Government” in December 2023.

“It is easier to be president of the CPLP, because we speak the same language, we understand each other more quickly, than speaking in a community where there is Portuguese, French and English”, he added, referring to the sub-regional organization in Africa Western.

“Therefore, as long as there is goodwill internally we have no problems. The rest will be in everyone’s interest and everyone wants to strengthen the CPLP, make it work according to the way its creators designed it”, he also stressed.

António Óscar Barbosa highlighted that the President, Sissoco Embaló, “is prepared for whatever comes”

“He is prepared and aware that the CPLP is a useful weapon for the development of Guinea-Bissau”, he concluded.
